[E3 2012] Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed Preview

Mario Kart dominates the niche genre of casual racing games. Sega had their first game in this genre with Sonic & All-Stars Racing, and now Sega is taking their second shot at it with Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. We were given the opportunity to try out a few levels at E3 and see what this newest installment is all about.

[E3 2012] Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale Preview

When Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale was initially announced, certain thoughts raced through everyone’s minds. It was about time for Sony to have their own mascot-filled brawler, especially considering the success of Super Smash Bros. to date; what characters would fill the cast; how would Sony deal with the impending lawsuit? However, all of that is under the impression that the game would be an exact clone of Nintendo’s series. With veteran fighting game players like Edward Ma and Daniel “Clockw0rk” Maniago associated with the title, we knew to expect something different.

[E3 2012] Project P-100 Preview

Amidst the Nintendo booth at E3 this year, there was hardly a spot where we did not see a Wii-U console and an early build of a game that was already widely available on either the Xbox 360 of PS3. However, one Platinum Games title stood out, though it has been making less noise than most other titles. Despite not even have an actual name yet, dubbed Project P-100 as a working title, it’s already making our wish list for the Wii-U’s launch.

[E3 2012] Orgarhythm Preview

In recent years, the music rhythm genre has evolved to more than simply following directions on the screen to the beat of music. Patapon was one of the iconic games that showed us how music can be used differently – more as a guide to rather than the featured action. XSEED Games’s new title, Orgarhythm, takes another stab at that concept by placing players in the shoes of a god commanding his troops in battle.

[E3 2012] Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance Preview

Out of all of Square-Enix’s franchises, Kingdom Hearts is arguably the one that’s been around the block the most. There has been a different version available on practically every portable device since the series’ inception, and now it’s about to hit the Nintendo’s 3D portable. With a little over a month before its release, we check out the game at E3.

[E3 2012] Dishonored Preview

Traditionally, the stealth genre has either focused on the use of existing technology, such as in Metal Gear Solid 3, or futuristic technology right out of a science fiction flick, best seen in Deus Ex: Human Revolution. However, with Bethesda’s Dishonored, the genre takes a whole different route and places the grunt of the character’s techniques in the supernatural. From what we saw at E3, it’s looking great so far and chunks of our minds are still being cleaned off the floors of the Los Angeles Convention Center.

[E3 2012] Mugen Souls Preview

I’d like to think that gamers have developed somewhat of a thick skin, especially over the years as video games have become more accepted and any prejudiced statements towards gamers are viewed as exactly that. However, every once in a while we’re met with a game that embarrasses us to our core to ever play in public. Idea Factory’s Mugen Souls is exactly that game – despite the fear of potentially critical glances, I couldn’t help but enjoy myself playing the game.

[E3 2012] Persona 4 Arena Preview

Though tasked with creating fighting games before, Arc System Works has generally worked on games like Sengoku Basara X that seemed perfect for a transition to fighting games. Imagine many gamers’ surprise when Persona 4 Arena, a fighting game adapted from Altus’s popular RPG series, was first announced. Though the two genres don’t quite mix, there’s no question that the Persona series’ colorful designs are a perfect fit for any Arc System Works game. While at E3, we got in some playtime with the game and are already impressed with the adaptation.

[E3 2012] Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance Preview

When first unveiled two years ago, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance quickly drew skeptical eyes for absence of Snake, but at the same time resulted in excitement for the two people who liked Raiden (myself included). The most perplexing part of Revengeance may not be the choice of protagonist, but how the game would consolidate its roots as a stealth action game with the tone that a cyborg-ninja Raiden would set for it. From the early build offered at E3, there is definitely a switch in focus, but Hideo Kojima’s long time love for sneaking still survived.
